Members of the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Division are community minded volunteers that have a strong commitment to public service for the people of Harrison County. The members consist of men and women that volunteer more than 12,000 hours annually in community service performing such duties as the Sheriff directs.

Some of the duties consist of, but are not limited to, patrolling the highways and rural roads within the county, assisting in road blocks and traffic details, serving warrants, and making arrests. In addition, the Reserve Division provides security for special events such as Mardi Gras parades, high school ball games, church events, and several Harrison County events such as the Gulfport Fishing Rodeo, Sacred Heart Fair, Sacred Heart Softball Tournament and the Memorial Day Harley Blowout.

The Unit utilizes its resources and talents to further charitable causes which benefit the citizens of Harrison County and will continue to devote many hours of personal service toward the goal of enhancing the public image of the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office.

Reserve candidates can become fully certified part-time/reserve deputies by completing either the sixteen (16) week part-time academy or by attending the ten (10) week residential academy. The sixteen week academy meets on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 6:00PM until 10:00PM and nine (9) of the sixteen (16) Saturdays from 8:00AM until 4:00PM. Attendance at this sixteen (16) week academy will meet the requirements as established by the State of Mississippi for an individual to become a Part-time/Reserve deputy.

 

Charter Information & Responsibilities


The charter of the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department Reserve Division identifies that its members shall assist in:

  • Preserving the public safety and security of property.
  • Developing good public relations with the community.
  • Preventing and deterring crime.
  • Apprehending offenders of the law.
  • Recovering and returning stolen property.
  • Execution of civil and criminal process from the courts.
  • Facilitating the safe movement of traffic.
  • Lawfully detaining criminal suspect(s).
  • Providing law enforcement assistance during public events.
  • Providing traffic control during special events.
  • Enhancing the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office public image.
  • Performing other duties as specified by the Sheriff of Harrison County.

Requirements & Application Process

If qualified, you will become part of a unique group of men and women volunteer officers that provide a variety of public service functions to enhance and supplement the capabilities of the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office full-time members.

Each Reserve Unit Member undergoes the same stringent screening process as regular officers to ensure that only the most qualified personnel are entrusted with the public’s safety.

Applicants for the position of Reserve Deputy Sheriff must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a United States Citizen.
  • At the time of appointment, be at least 21 years of age.
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Possess a valid Mississippi Class “C” Driver’s License or higher.
  • Be gainfully employed or a full time student.
  • Be available to attend the Sheriff’s Office Reserve Academy.
  • Be willing to subscribe to the oath of affirmation of allegiance for public employees.
  • Be in good physical condition and free from disease or defects that would interfere with the satisfactory performance of the duties of this position.

Application Process for Reserve Duty

The first step for each interested applicant is to get the standard Employment Application which is available by clicking here, or by picking up a copy from the Administrative Offices of the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office.

Physical Training

As established by BLEOST, all applicants must successfully complete the required PT screening at a rate of 50% to gain acceptance to the Reserve/Parttime Academy. Once accepted, cadets must complete the required PT test at a minimum 70% success level to complete the Reserve/Part-time Academy.

Background Check

The background check is performed in three phases. The first phase is the completion of a Background Investigation Form, which is returned to a Professional Standards officer.

The second phase is an interview between the applicant and the Professional Standards officer, to review the information on the form, ensure that all requested information is present, and clarify any information as required.

The final phase is the actual investigation, performed by an Professional Standards officer, based upon the information provided by the applicant.

Voice Stress Analysis

Each applicant will be required to undergo a voice stress analysis examination, provided by the Sheriff’s Office. It is a series of approximately 20 questions, and takes no more than 45 minutes to perform.

Reserve Hiring Board

Applicants proceeding to this point will be scheduled to come before a Hiring Board composed of 4-5 members of the Reserve Unit. At this time, the applicant is interviewed by the board, and at the conclusion of the interview, a decision is made to extend a conditional offer of employment. Individuals who accept this offer continue with the final stages of the hiring process.

Medical Examination / Drug Screen

All applicants will receive a county provided medical examination and drug screen.
